Our Outing at Blue Heron Pines
"Golf isn't supposed to be work. It's to have fun." - Moe Norman
(Played on Friday, July 27th, 2018)
Blue Heron Pines is an 18 hole public golf course in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. It was formally a 36 hole golf club, but it has been whittled down to just 18 over the years. If you go onto Google Maps, you can still see the outlines of the forgotten holes. It is owned by Ron Jaworski's company, who also run golf courses like RiverWinds, Running Deer, etc.
The outing we were invited to was run by our former high school's scholarship committee, who raise money to give scholarships to kids interested in going there. Former student, and NHL Hockey player Johnny Gaudreau uses his name to promote the event, and even gets other NHL celebrities to come play in select groups. Philadelphia Flyer Shane Gostisbehere was in the group behind ours.
At the outing, there were a whole lot of side games to go along with the lowest best ball score. On two of the par 3s, holes 2 and 16, brand new cars are available to win if you hit a hole in one. On hole 4, a hole in one wins you a money certificate for a jewelry store. And on the par 3 11th, if you hit your tee shot within a certain distance, you can win twice what you originally bet.
There were also three other side games, straightest drive, longest drive, and a chance to hole a 130 yard shot into a par 5 for a chance to win a trip for two to Pebble Beach. Safe to say, we didn't win anything. However, our buddy Jaden came very, very close to winning the longest drive.
To talk more on Blue Heron Pines, although the course isn't on the same level as courses like Running Deer or Riverwinds, it is still one of the top courses in the area. While we wouldn't necessarily go out of our way to play it every week, we thought the conditions of the course were very, very good.
Here are a few more photos of the course and from our day:
Although we didn't win, our final score was a 12-under 60. It may sound crazy, but we all knew we left a lot of shots out there. Winning was a possibility all the way until the end. Maybe next year it will be ours to take home.
Until then, we've got plenty more golf in our area to play.

Jaden's 300+ drive on the par 4 ninth. Close to winning, but just not enough. |
