Our Outing at Blue Heron Pines

Our Outing at Blue Heron Pines

"Golf isn't supposed to be work. It's to have fun." - Moe Norman

(Played on Friday, July 27th, 2018)

The Sunday Golfers, plus Jaden.

Blue Heron Pines is an 18 hole public golf course in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. It was formally a 36 hole golf club, but it has been whittled down to just 18 over the years. If you go onto Google Maps, you can still see the outlines of the forgotten holes. It is owned by Ron Jaworski's company, who also run golf courses like RiverWinds, Running Deer, etc.

The outing we were invited to was run by our former high school's scholarship committee, who raise money to give scholarships to kids interested in going there. Former student, and NHL Hockey player Johnny Gaudreau uses his name to promote the event, and even gets other NHL celebrities to come play in select groups. Philadelphia Flyer Shane Gostisbehere was in the group behind ours.

At the outing, there were a whole lot of side games to go along with the lowest best ball score. On two of the par 3s, holes 2 and 16, brand new cars are available to win if you hit a hole in one. On hole 4, a hole in one wins you a money certificate for a jewelry store. And on the par 3 11th, if you hit your tee shot within a certain distance, you can win twice what you originally bet.

Chris Pusey on hole 11.

There were also three other side games, straightest drive, longest drive, and a chance to hole a 130 yard shot into a par 5 for a chance to win a trip for two to Pebble Beach. Safe to say, we didn't win anything. However, our buddy Jaden came very, very close to winning the longest drive.

Jaden's 300+ drive on the par 4 ninth. Close to winning, but just not enough.

To talk more on Blue Heron Pines, although the course isn't on the same level as courses like Running Deer or Riverwinds, it is still one of the top courses in the area. While we wouldn't necessarily go out of our way to play it every week, we thought the conditions of the course were very, very good.

Colman hitting his drive into the short par 4 7th.

Here are a few more photos of the course and from our day:

Jaden ready to obliterate his drive.

The dangerous 10th green.

The waste area similar to one you might see at Pine Valley.

Thomas hitting his approach into the #1 handicap 15th.

The team.

Although we didn't win, our final score was a 12-under 60. It may sound crazy, but we all knew we left a lot of shots out there. Winning was a possibility all the way until the end. Maybe next year it will be ours to take home.

Until then, we've got plenty more golf in our area to play.

Westwood Golf Club

Westwood Golf Club "The harder you work, the luckier you get." - Gary Player (Played on February 19th, 2020) We have been trying to find the inspiration to write about Westwood for a long time now. It has been a course some of us have been playing for over 5 years. However, we never really got around to playing a full 18 holes at Westwood together until recently. So, this review is well overdue. We are going to feature a few photos from our day, as well as some from our rounds over the past few years that we have collected. If you follow us on Instagram (@TheSundayGolfers) you might recognize a few of them. Colman on the par five 1st hole. Thomas teeing off the par five 1st hole. Christopher launching one right down the middle on the par five opener at Westwood. Westwood has the easiest three holes to start a golf course you might ever see. The first hole is a dead straight, 450 yard par five, with only a couple bunkers in front of the green to stop pe...

Shore Gate Golf Club

Shore Gate Golf Club "Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you." - Arnold Palmer (Played on May 12th, 2020) Coronavirus has put a bit of a hitch in our summer plans. When we were not allowed to play golf for a month and a half here in New Jersey, we all had to sit inside and find things to keep our minds occupied as we slowly went insane. Thankfully, our governor finally allowed our courses to open up in the beginning of May, so Colman and Chris decided to take full advantage and play a course we had not yet played. That is how we found ourselves down the shore at Shore Gate Golf Club. Chris Pusey on the opening hole at Shore Gate Golf Club Shore Gate Golf Club has a private club atmosphere, but it is fully open to the public. While the greens were recently aerated which put a bit of a damper on the round, it did not take away from just how outstanding the rest of the course was. The course is tight. Keeping the ball in the fairway is the ...

The Sunday Golfers Year In Review 2019 Edition

Our 2019 Year In Review "Touch is something you create by hitting a million golf balls." - Lee Trevino While we apologize for the lack of posting on our blog as of late, we have all been very busy to travel around and play new courses in our area together. With work, school, and other engagements, finding the right time get together and play is not easy.  However, that has not stopped us from playing every chance we get. If you would like to see what we have been up to, or just want to check in on some pretty sweet photos we have taken, check us out on our Instagram @TheSundayGolfers. January 26th - We began our year at our local municipal Pitman Golf Course . While it may not be Bethpage Black level of municipal, this course was designed by the same man who designed East Lake Golf Club in Georgia, where they play the Tour Championship every year. It is not the most challenging golf course in the area, but its classic design makes it fun to play every single time we te...
