More Winter Golf in South Jersey
"Nae wind, nae rain, it's nae golf." - old Scottish proverb
(Played on Sunday, February 4th, 2018)
Winter golf is no fun. Every golfer can agree with that. Chris Colman and Thomas Pusey came to a consensus several times that they couldn't wait spring, or summer, or even a 50 degree day when it doesn't rain.
Chris and Thomas (Chris Pusey decided to be smart and stay home.) tried to brace the 35 degree day at Beckett Golf Club, wearing several layers each between them, gloves, hats, and whatever else they could bundle up with to try and survive a few hours in the cold.
Now, we understand that the weather conditions are a big part of the game, and we would never try and blame the weather for how we played. However, when the greens are frozen solid, and the fairways and rough are spongy, golf is essentially impossible to play.
Because we knew our scores would be insanely high if we decided to keep score, we chose to play matchplay for a dollar a hole, which made for a very good match because Chris and Thomas are very identical players, with almost the same handicaps.
After 9 holes of back and forth, Chris had a lead over Thomas that he would extend over the second 9, somehow making several lucky pars that Thomas just could not answer.
Just like in our first round of the year, a close two-man match which you can read right here, Chris won it on the 15th hole, 4 and 3.
However, Chris didn't collect. The two usually play one club in on the 19th hole just for fun, but Thomas decided to throw down the hammer, and made a double or nothing bet. Lowest score wins.
After Thomas sliced his shot left, and Chris pulled his shot left, the match was anybody's game. But Chris's ball was between some roots under a tree, and had no option but pitch it back into the fairway with his five iron and hope Thomas makes a mistake.
Thomas did not.
Chris made one however, and hit the green with his third shot, which promptly ricocheted off the frozen green, coming to rest next to 16th tee. At this point, Thomas's money was essentially safe, and after Chris tapped in for his 9, the two shook hands and walked off the green, both hoping the next round they play would be on normal greens, and with much nicer weather.
So, that essentially wraps up our post this time around, but if you know us, as long as the weather is tolerable, we'll be out there.
If any of you have been wondering what courses we may have on our agenda this upcoming spring/summer, we have about 10 that are definitely on our itinerary to play very soon, but we are always looking for others to add to our list:
- Atlantic City Country Club, in Northfield, New Jersey.
- Bulle Rock Golf Club, in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
- Riverwinds Golf Club, in West Deptford, New Jersey.
- Running Deer Golf Club, in Elmer, New Jersey.
- Twisted Dune Golf Club, in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
- Ballamor Golf Club, in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.
- Pitman Golf Course, in Sewell, New Jersey.
- Scotland Run Golf Club, in Williamstown, New Jersey.
- Baywood Greens, in Millsboro, Delaware.
- Pine Valley Golf Club, in Pine Valley, New Jersey *
(*) Hopefully one day.
We will have many more in our sight as well!
