Birkdale Golf Club
"Golf is a game of misses." - Ben Hogan
(Played on Sunday, December 24th, 2017.)
Birkdale Golf Club is an Arnold Palmer designed golf course located in Huntersville, North Carolina, about a half an hour north of Charlotte.
This is not the same Royal Birkdale that Jordan Spieth won his third major last Open Championship, obviously.
You may be wondering why we are all the way down here, instead of back in the homeland that is New Jersey. Well, two-thirds of us were still in chilly New Jersey on Christmas Eve, while the other third was playing golf in just as chilly North Carolina.
Chris Colman was the lone Sunday Golfer, playing with his uncle while visiting relatives in Huntersville. He surely missed his two friends while he was playing, but nothing could stop him from playing.
Colman had played this course a few times, but never had the chance to take many photos, so he finally had photos of his own to show. He has played this course in the summer, and in the winter, so when he found out that he was going to be playing golf while he was away on holiday, he knew that the course would look very brown because the weather had been cold, the Bermuda grass would give the course a completely different looking course.
When Colman sent a photo to the Sunday Golfer groupchat, Chris Pusey said that the course looked "looks dead". Colman said that it kind of reminded him of Chambers Bay in the 2015 U.S. Open, and he liked it a lot.
Above is the 18th green, with a very large pond that the picture doesn't do justice. A forced layup off the tee can make or break your score here. Colman's uncle demonstrated this by knocking two into the pond when his drive wasn't long enough.
At Birkdale, there are a lot of fun memorable holes, very reachable par 4 and par 5 holes, and a couple difficult holes that can make for an interesting golf day if you are not on your game.
Colman said that his favorite hole was the par 5 5th hole, featured above. A great drive unfortunately requires a layup, because the green is very shallow with danger all around it. Colman said he did not have a great drive to start with, forcing him to punch out to the side of the pond, but was able to thin a wedge to the front of the green. Par on his hole is good, but making birdie is also very possible if played correctly.
Here are a few more photos from Colman's day at Birkdale.
The clubhouse at Birkdale is very nice, and even though it was Christmas the restaurant was open and we were able to get a quick lunch before hustling home.
Although Colman enjoyed his round with his uncle, especially since his uncle paid the very reasonable greens fees, he definitely missed his buddies and can't wait until all three of them can get out on the course again. But with the weather that New Jersey is about to get, the odds are that they will have to wait for a few weeks until better weather rolls through.
We hope you enjoyed our review. This is our first review from outside New Jersey, and have plenty more to come soon.
