Birkdale Golf Club

Birkdale Golf Club

"Golf is a game of misses." - Ben Hogan

(Played on Sunday, December 24th, 2017.)

Birkdale Golf Club is an Arnold Palmer designed golf course located in Huntersville, North Carolina, about a half an hour north of Charlotte.

The 9th flagstick at Birkdale.

This is not the same Royal Birkdale that Jordan Spieth won his third major last Open Championship, obviously.

You may be wondering why we are all the way down here, instead of back in the homeland that is New Jersey. Well, two-thirds of us were still in chilly New Jersey on Christmas Eve, while the other third was playing golf in just as chilly North Carolina.

Chris Colman was the lone Sunday Golfer, playing with his uncle while visiting relatives in Huntersville. He surely missed his two friends while he was playing, but nothing could stop him from playing.

Colman had played this course a few times, but never had the chance to take many photos, so he finally had photos of his own to show. He has played this course in the summer, and in the winter, so when he found out that he was going to be playing golf while he was away on holiday, he knew that the course would look very brown because the weather had been cold, the Bermuda grass would give the course a completely different looking course.

When Colman sent a photo to the Sunday Golfer groupchat, Chris Pusey said that the course looked "looks dead". Colman said that it kind of reminded him of Chambers Bay in the 2015 U.S. Open, and he liked it a lot.

Above is the 18th green, with a very large pond that the picture doesn't do justice. A forced layup off the tee can make or break your score here. Colman's uncle demonstrated this by knocking two into the pond when his drive wasn't long enough.

At Birkdale, there are a lot of fun memorable holes, very reachable par 4 and par 5 holes, and a couple difficult holes that can make for an interesting golf day if you are not on your game.

The shallow par 5 5th green, fronted by a pond and rocks, a small waterfall and stream to the right of it, and guarded by a bunker behind it.

Colman said that his favorite hole was the par 5 5th hole, featured above. A great drive unfortunately requires a layup, because the green is very shallow with danger all around it. Colman said he did not have a great drive to start with, forcing him to punch out to the side of the pond, but was able to thin a wedge to the front of the green. Par on his hole is good, but making birdie is also very possible if played correctly.

Here are a few more photos from Colman's day at Birkdale.

The clubhouse at Birkdale is very nice, and even though it was Christmas the restaurant was open and we were able to get a quick lunch before hustling home.

Although Colman enjoyed his round with his uncle, especially since his uncle paid the very reasonable greens fees, he definitely missed his buddies and can't wait until all three of them can get out on the course again. But with the weather that New Jersey is about to get, the odds are that they will have to wait for a few weeks until better weather rolls through.

We hope you enjoyed our review. This is our first review from outside New Jersey, and have plenty more to come soon.

Westwood Golf Club "The harder you work, the luckier you get." - Gary Player (Played on February 19th, 2020) We have been trying to find the inspiration to write about Westwood for a long time now. It has been a course some of us have been playing for over 5 years. However, we never really got around to playing a full 18 holes at Westwood together until recently. So, this review is well overdue. We are going to feature a few photos from our day, as well as some from our rounds over the past few years that we have collected. If you follow us on Instagram (@TheSundayGolfers) you might recognize a few of them. Colman on the par five 1st hole. Thomas teeing off the par five 1st hole. The first hole is a dead straight, 450 yard par five, with only a couple bunkers in front of the green to stop pe

The Sunday Golfers Year In Review 2019 Edition

Our 2019 Year In Review "Touch is something you create by hitting a million golf balls." - Lee Trevino While we apologize for the lack of posting on our blog as of late, we have all been very busy to travel around and play new courses in our area together. With work, school, and other engagements, finding the right time get together and play is not easy.  However, that has not stopped us from playing every chance we get. If you would like to see what we have been up to, or just want to check in on some pretty sweet photos we have taken, check us out on our Instagram @TheSundayGolfers. January 26th - We began our year at our local municipal Pitman Golf Course . While it may not be Bethpage Black level of municipal, this course was designed by the same man who designed East Lake Golf Club in Georgia, where they play the Tour Championship every year. It is not the most challenging golf course in the area, but its classic design makes it fun to play every single time we te

Shore Gate Golf Club

Shore Gate Golf Club "Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you." - Arnold Palmer (Played on May 12th, 2020) Coronavirus has put a bit of a hitch in our summer plans. When we were not allowed to play golf for a month and a half here in New Jersey, we all had to sit inside and find things to keep our minds occupied as we slowly went insane. Thankfully, our governor finally allowed our courses to open up in the beginning of May, so Colman and Chris decided to take full advantage and play a course we had not yet played. That is how we found ourselves down the shore at Shore Gate Golf Club. Chris Pusey on the opening hole at Shore Gate Golf Club Shore Gate Golf Club has a private club atmosphere, but it is fully open to the public. While the greens were recently aerated which put a bit of a damper on the round, it did not take away from just how outstanding the rest of the course was. The course is tight. Keeping the ball in the fairway is the
